GARTAN OUTDOOR EDUCATION  - BEACH  Lifeguard Courses Open for Booking 2008

 GARTAN OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE  forms part of the National Vocational Education structure through the Donegal Vocational Education Committee (VEC). Gartan is one of twelve Outdoor Education Centres (OEC) sanctioned by the Department of Education and Science. Gartan OEC is located in the beautiful and wild heart of County Donegal and offers excellent facilities and accommodation. Gartan OEC offers five National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) courses in 2008. Three of these courses will run over two weekends and two courses will run intensively for one week duration each. All NBLQ courses carry full and practical international recognition and are approved by RLSS and registered through LIFEGUARDS IRELAND.

In addition to the National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) Gartan OEC are pleased to offer the following RLSS Lifeguard additional ‘Specialist Units’  during 2008 - Surf Lifeguard module, Malibu rescue board module, Paddle Craft rescue module. These courses are one day and are open to candidates who already hold a valid National Beach Lifeguard Qualification.

To participate in the MALIBU RESCUE BOARD specialist unit previous and proven experience in surfing is recommended.  To participate in the SURF RESCUE specialist unit previous and proven experience as a competent  surfer is a prerequisite. If would also be a great advantage if you held the NBLQ in advance of the SURF LIFEGUARD unit.

 For participation in either unit current membership of the IRISH SURFING ASSOCIATION is  highly desirable and priority will be given to ISA members.  GARTAN OEC reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient interest is not shown. If you are already booked on a course you will be offered an alternative date.

COURSES  INFORMATION

The world-recognised RLSS National Beach Lifeguard Qualification is run under the direction of LIFEGUARDS IRELAND. Courses are usually run over two weekends or intensively, during Easter week to facilitate those planning to do the County Council beach lifeguard tests. Course fees include registration, training, assessment & certification  Total cost is  €390.

A one day preparatory course aims to sharpen your skills in Life Support and Water Skills and to help prepare you for the interview.  Pre-requisite is either a valid NBLQ (RLSS) or Lifeguard Award (Irish Water Safety) Fee per person €80 DATE Saturday March 1^st.

Life Support 1 is an RLSS certified course in basic first aid: suitable for parents, schools & sports coaches & anyone working with the public. This course will prepare you to know what to do if faced with an accident or emergency. Course fees include registration, training, assessment & certification. Total cost is €150

 Life Support 3 courses are a more intensive and detailed, suitable for sports coaches, teachers, hotel staff, carers, safety officers, etc. Registration, training, assessment & certification €250

 The new EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTIVITY SUPERVISOR (Outdoor Water) course is specially designed for teachers, coaches, supervisors & staff and all those involved in organising watersports, beach events, casual use of water sites and areas close to water. Candidates for ERAS will have to be able to swim 50m comfortably and be prepared to learn basic, practical skills. This award can be achieved by most people involved in aquatic activities.  Registration, training, assessment & certification is €300

As demand is already heavy for courses in 2008 we recommend that if you are really interested, then don't hang about, go book now. Booking with deposit  will secure your place. For obvious safety reasons, candidate numbers are limited on all courses so it is a case of first booked and paid, first in.
